To Boldly Go!

It’s time to take coaching into new arenas.

Even if you are not a Trekkie and are only vaguely familiar with the original Star Trek series, you likely still can recall the opening to the show, a monologue that included the famous line: “To boldly go where no man has gone before.”

Though familiar, the phrase now seems a bit odd. For one, it’s an obvious split infinitive. I know only editors care about split infinitives, but still. Second, where are the women? Are men going where the fairer gender have already been? Oh well.

Even with those quirky faults, the phrase has staying power. It reminds us that we humans need to risk, to venture into the unchartered, and to stretch beyond what is.

I like that sentiment; it rings powerful and true to me.

In this edition of Christian Coaching Magazine, I cannot help but notice how several of the articles are written by women and men who are taking coaching into new and not-yet-explored spaces.

When I was introduced to coaching (over ten years ago) who would have thought that coaching would find its way into preaching, campus ministry, or short-term missions?

Coaches are a enterprising bunch. We have found coaching to be a mindset and set of skills that can go most anywhere. While formal coaching sessions are great, why should we stay earthbound? Why not take coaching into campus dorm rooms, weight loss centers and pulpits? Why not allow coaching to inform our approaches to leading and ministry?

In what new areas does coaching need to flourish in your life, work, and/or ministry? How is the gravity of old thinking keeping your coaching grounded to only the well-trodden and mundane matters? What new voyages could you expect if you unleashed coaching into new spaces, places, conversations and roles?

Let me encourage you to be bold in your coaching. Yes, even “to boldly go” where you have not yet gone before.

Chad Hall, PCC is the Director of Coaching for Western Seminary and serves a coach and coach trainer among ministry and marketplace leaders.

Who says you can’t you teach an old dog new tricks?

When a coach understands the brain’s habit-formation process, the coach can help the client create good habits and change bad ones.

In The Power of Habit, author Charles Duhigg does not give a one-size-fits-all secret formula for quickly changing our deeply ingrained habits, but instead offers a framework for understanding our habits. Duhigg, a reporter for The New York Times, insists that if habits can be changed we must understand how they work. Each chapter is rich with scientific research and compelling stories, each building on a different aspect of why habits exist and how they function in life, business, and culture.
